Chitradurga District is situated geographically at the central part of the Karnataka state, India. Chitradurga has historical implication enriched with the sites of historical ancient, cultural and religious significance which is located 200 kilometers away from Bengaluru. This place was occupied or rules by Shatavahanas, Kadambas, Chalukyas, The Rastrakutaas, The Cholas, Vijayanagara dynasty and The Mysuru Wodeyars. The most significant in the history of Chitradurga is the reign of Paleyagaras. Veera Madakarinayaka was most authoritative and powerful among all the Paleyagaras and Onake Obavva considered as a courageous and brave woman.

Chitradurga District Hospital (CDH) is established since over 70 years during the Mysuru princely state by his excellency Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. This district hospital is converted into Teaching Hospital of Chitradurga Medical College and Research Institute (CMCRI). This is well established 500 bed hospital catering health care services for the needy. Average OPD is 1000 per day with over 95% of bed occupancy. CDH provides health care services to maximum number of patients compared to all 30 district Hospitals of Karnataka State and statistically hold at 1st place. The health indicators of this district are low compare to adjoining district like Davanagere, Tumakuru and Shimoga districts. Recognizing this patient load and significance, Government of Karnataka permitted to establish Government Medical College at Chitradurga with admission of 150 MBBS seats from the 2023-24 academic year. In order to continue the process, CMCRI obtained Consent of Affiliation from esteemed Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru and Essentiality and Feasibility Certificate is issued by Government of Karnataka.

The team of assessors from National Medical Commission (NMC), New Delhi assessed the campus in February 2023. The compliance inspection was conducted by NMC in March 2023 and issued the Letter of Intent with Approval of 150 MBBS seats admission for the 2023-24 academic year.

The civil work for the establishment of the infrastructure and recruitment of required faculty for letter of permission is under process.
